Project Mio is a children's game I have been developing with Microsoft. A small and agile team of 4 have been working on the game for a year and a half now. We have gotten the game to the demo stage and have share it with a school in the south Seattle region for Hour of Code. We had many kids play the game with enthusiastic and positive feedback.

Right now we are still working on developing the game into a larger demo and possibly making it open source.

Project Mio is a game that exposes kids to coding. We wanted to make a game that kids would want to actually play. We tested other coding games and felt that they we're dry. We wanted to make an interesting story and include a lot of agility puzzles and exploration. Going from popular 2d games and focusing on exposure instead of deep learning we married the two. We wanted Mio to get kids over the stigma that coding is hard and too difficult to even try. In Mio we have simple puzzles that get a little harder as you progress through the game. We also included a dictionary that would give kids more exposure so those interested could learn more detail about coding principals and how code works.

Tablet Mode

When you come across coding challenges in the game you pull out your tablet to edit the code of objects on screen.

You collect Snippet Cards of an object and put them into your Repo editor.

Once you collected your cards you can drag them into your code editor window on the right manipulate or edit the object to complete your challenge.

Challenges

We planned out and developed challenges for each level. These were the moments where you pull our your (in game) tablet and use the code or debug to win the challenge.

Cast

We created a supporting cast, or at least a start to one. Here is a snippet of characters who may someday be seen in the game.

Wireframes

I created many wireframes and storyboards to help the developers understand how a challenge would work and for level layout.

Future Levels

We had many plans to build future levels for Mio. I created quite a bit of concept art to image where we could take Mio.

We also had plans to give Mio a personalization UI.
